People's Choice is an opportunity for the public to taste and vote for their favorite team. There two People's Choice rounds with approximately 10-12 teams per round. For $6 each round, you can taste a piece of each team's meat ($12 to taste both rounds). Both rounds are Saturday, April 27th, with Round 1 starting at approximately 11am and Round 2 starting at approximately 12:30pm. You can only purchase your tickets at the event and we are CASH ONLY. Lines usually begin before the start of each round so come early!
Within the People's Choice circle, we will also have music, raffles, sodas, water, and beer for sale. KB's Smokehouse will be selling their famous pulled pork nachos and other BBQ favorites.
What is the SERTOMA 48 BarBQ?
We call the Lawrence SERTOMA Cook-off the SERTOMA 48 BarBQ because we limit the competition to 48 teams competing in 4 categories (brisket, pork, chicken and ribs). It’s a BBQ battle of professionals and amateur cooks to win dollar prizes and ribbons. The public is invited to sample meats prepared for judging in a separate People's Choice contest. The event has been sanctioned by KCBS. Our competition is a State Championship, so our Grand Champion winner gets to compete in the American Royal Cook-Off!
Who are the CONTESTANTS?
All contestants must be members of the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS).
Why?
The money raised through our FUN-raising events have helped our community parks, city buildings and a variety of children’s projects for eighty years. 100% of the funds from our SERTOMA 48 BarBQ will be used to make it possible to continue these worthwhile projects. Over 50% of the money will be used for children and adults with speech, language and/or hearing disorders in Lawrence and Douglas County through our relationship with the Business-Education Partnership (USD 497) and the Schiefelbusch Clinic at the University of Kansas.
